South Wight Maritime SAC

South Wight Maritime is a dynamic Special Area of Conservation encompassing a large range of different reef types and associated communities. The site includes some of the most important sub-tidal chalk reefs in Britain.
 
The primary interest feature protected within the SAC under Annex 1 of the EU Habitats Directive is reef. Important sub-features of the reef include:
 
  • Rocky shore communities
  • Kelp forest communities
  • Sub-tidal red algae communities
  • Sub-tidal faunal turf communities
  • Sea cave communities
